Association for Educational Communications and Technology (AECT) Standards

Throughout the course of this semester, the projects and assignments I have completed have aligned with the AECT standards. Below is a list of each standard and how it has been fulfilled.

AECT Standard 1 (Content Knowledge): Candidates demonstrate the knowledge necessary to create, use, assess, and manage theoretical and practical applications of educational technologies and processes.

  • Standard 1 was fulfilled through several assignments in this course, but specifically, the Educational Theorist presentation and the Internet for Instruction assignments. Jean Piaget was the educational theorist assigned to me for this assignment, and I had to research his educational theories and apply them to technology. Through my research, I learned a lot about how technology truly does apply to instruction and education in many ways. In the assignment about using the Internet for instruction, I researched discussion boards, chat rooms, and web conferencing as practical applications of educational technologies that could effectively enhance learning for all students.

AECT Standard 2 (Content Pedagogy): Candidates develop as reflective practitioners able to demonstrate effective implementation of educational technologies and processes based on contemporary content and pedagogy.

  • The Instructional Software project in this class addressed Standard 2 through the research and analysis of different types of instructional software. For this project, I examined Drill and Practice, Tutorial, Simulation, Instructional Games, and Problem Solving software that could be used in a classroom to enhance instruction. These types of software are effective ways to integrate technology into instruction to help motivate students and make learning fun.

AECT Standard 3 (Learning Environments): Candidates facilitate learning by creating, using, evaluating, and managing effective learning environments.

  • Through the Social Networking assignment, I fulfilled Standard 3 by researching various types of learning environments that could be integrated into a traditional classroom. Specifically, blogs, social networks, and the use of cell phones in the classroom were discussed and analyzed in this project, and for each, a description of what it is, the relative advantage for using it, ideas for instruction, additional resources, and an example were provided.

AECT Standard 4 (Professional Knowledge and Skills): Candidates design, develop, implement, and evaluate technology-rich learning environments within a supportive community of practice.

  • Through the spreadsheet-supported lesson assignment, Standard 4 was fulfilled. To carry out this project, I designed a lesson plan based on using a spreadsheet and developed a lesson format, including handouts and instructional materials. This lesson was designed to be taught in a high school course called Orientation to Teaching, but the principles from the lesson could easily be transferred to any discipline.

AECT Standard 5 (Research): Candidates explore, evaluate, synthesize, and apply methods of inquiry to enhance learning and improve performance.

  • One assignment that addressed Standard 5 would be the Assistive Technology project. Through this project, I researched assistive technology, various examples of assistive technology, and ways to help students learn using assistive technology. I provided several resources, including articles and videos that could help make teachers more aware of available assistive technologies for students.
